Amazon builds 600 strong Manchester team

A new corporate office has been established by Amazon in Manchester, located in the city’s Northern Quarter. The 90,000 sq.ft. facility will eventually be home to some 600 employees including technology teams. Amazon is also set to launch a Future Engineering Bursary which will support financially disadvantaged undergraduates studying computer sciences.

Cynics have suggested that this new development has been planned by Amazon to divert attention from its global tax strategy which sees it pay very little tax in the countries, including the UK, where it generates significant revenues. The online giant is coming under much close scrutiny and has spurred the UK government to consider levying a tax on global digital corporations to ensure that they are brought in line with local competitors in all matters pertaining to taxation.

Doug Gurr, Amazon’s UK country manager said of the office opening: “I am delighted that we’re opening our first corporate office in the North of England. Manchester offers an incredible talent pool, a thriving hub of fast-growing UK tech start-ups and is a centre of academic and intellectual excellence. We are already hiring from a range of skill-sets for our Manchester office.”
