Argos gears up for Christmas

Argos’ website has achieved 130 million visits in the past 12
months. The annual value of its online business for direct and
reservation sales, is now in excess of £750 million, with
direct sales increasing 75 per cent year on year. Argos says that
last year, in the three months leading up to Christmas it sold
enough toys for every child in the UK to have received one on
Christmas Day. Sara Weller, managing director of Argos said,
“Argos sets the benchmark for the multi-channel retail
model; we have been doing it for much longer than our competitors
and we know that to be successful requires substantial
investment, scale and expertise.”

In response to “encouraging early performance” Argos
has extended its trial of the separate Home catalogue. The second
edition will now be available in some 200 stores and feature 340
pages of furniture and home accessories in “a more
aspirational way”. Increased emphasis has been given to
housewares, including new selections for bathroom and kitchen
ranges.

The retailer recently completed a WEEE compliant three-month
trial with Wincanton to recycle its electrical and electronic
returns. Mark Jones, project manager, Argos, commented, “The
partnership with Wincanton has been extremely useful in
ascertaining the processes we need to have in place when
legislation is introduced next year. The recycling of electrical
and electronic equipment poses unique challenges and our work
with Wincanton has helped to illustrate ways in which we can
achieve best practice in recycling WEEE.”
