Australia to slash GST-free online threshold

The Australian government has reached broad agreement to remove the GST concession that has been in place for online purchases from overseas merchants of up to Aus $1,000  value. The concession has, say local market bricks & mortar retailers, provided international online sellers with an unfair advantage. A meeting of the treasury scheduled for August is expected to recommend that the concession will in future apply only to low value orders of up to Aus $20. This will require overseas companies selling physical products, music and movie downloads, and distance learning courses,  online to customers in Australia to levy and remit 10 per cent GST from 2017.
