Herschell Gordon Lewis passes away

Former Direct Commerce magazine contributor and ECMOD speaker Herschell Gordon Lewis has passed away at the age of 87. A prolific author of textbooks on copywriting and direct marketing and a seasoned copywriter for direct response packs and catalogues, Herschell was also very well known in a completely different sphere for his earlier career as a film director specialising in the horror genre. His film work earned him the honorary title “Godfather of Gore”. In our circle, it was Herschell’s sharp wit and ability to bring humour to his training workshops as well as his extensive catalogue of published work which is still regularly referred to by many copywriters today.

Herschell was a contributor to the very first issue of Direct Commerce magazine forerunner Catalogue & Mail Order Business magazine in 1995 and continued to write for the title for over two decades as well as coming to the UK to deliver sell-out copywriting training for ECMOD and Catalogue Development Centre delegates on numerous occasions.

A consumate professional, he was quite literally one of a kind and will be sorely missed.
