John Lewis rebrand has sting in its tail

John Lewis has re-branded both its department store and supermarket businesses. Each now has ‘& Partners’ added to its name as the retailer attempts to boost its market share. However despite investment in the re-brand, a new upmarket footwear department and improvements to its beauty halls, the retailer has announced job cuts. 270 employees in IT, finance and security departments will leave the business, following the 1400 who were made redundant last year. Bonuses based on profits which all qualifying staff partners receive have also been slashed as the retailer struggles with tough trading conditions. It has been hit hard by aggressive sale promotions at both House of Fraser and Debenhams in recent months.
