Sustainability targets at Debenhams

For 2019 Debenhams says it reduced its use of packaging by 22 per cent whilst sourcing over 2 million garments made from sustainable cotton and stopping clothes hangers from going to landfill.

It now plans to sustainably source 100 per cent of its cotton by 2020, ensure that all of its own-brand products have at least one sustainable attribute by September 2020, and also to remove all lamination from swing tickets by December 2020. In addition, it will roll out an operational take-back scheme this Spring to all stores to recycle old stock and samples in partnership with NewLife which supports disabled and terminally ill children and their families. Steven Cook, Debenhams managing director of fashion, home & beauty said: “In 2019, consumers spent increased amounts on well-being and experiences and their focus on ethical and sustainable retail is growing. These trends look set to continue in 2020 and fortunately, department stores are well placed to cater for them. Our goal is that every product we sell should have at least one sustainable attribute.”
