Amazon to test new safety tech at one of its UK DCs

Amazon has selected its Doncaster distribution centre for the trial of new technology which aims to improve employee safety. Automated guided vehicles and robot sorters, from its own lab in Italy will be brought in later this year. This comes as Amazon seeks to shake off union pressures on the back of reports of high levels of ambulance call-outs to Amazon premises around the UK, amidst talk of productivity being prioritised over worker safety.

Stefano Perego, VP for Amazon’s fulfilment centre operations in Europe, said: “We prioritise the safety of all our employees and are constantly looking for ways to further improve safety measures in our facilities. We want to become the safest place on earth to work – right across our business. That’s why we continue to invest in technologies and training for our people.”

Stefano La Rovere, head of EU advanced technology at Amazon, added: “We work closely with health and safety experts and scientists, conduct thousands of safety inspections each day in our buildings, and have made hundreds of changes as a result of employee feedback on how we can improve their wellbeing at work.”
