The first quarter of fiscal 2008 was a good one for
Premier Farnell. As noted on ElectronicsWeekly.com, the electronics
components distributor not only grew year-on-year pretax profit
by 17 per cent, but it even managed to increase sales in the
“problematic” UK market by 4.4 per cent.

Finisterre, a direct seller of surfwear, won the
Observer Ethical Award in the ethical
fashion category. The awards recognise environmentally aware
organisations and individuals.Natural Collection, which
sells a broad range of eco-friendly gifts and housewares, won
the online retailer category for the third year in a row; food
marketer Abel & Cole and gifts mailer Traidcraft
were runners-up.

From The Independent: “Consumer confidence
has plummeted to an all-time low, sending retailers an ominous
signal for the remainder of 2008, according to the British
Retail Consortium.”

N Brown chief exec Alan White took home a
performance-related bonus of £466,000 for fiscal 2007,
reports Crain’s Manchester Business. The multibrand
mailer reported annual pretax profit of £78 million.
