Retail sales enjoy strong uplift over pre-pandemic level

Figures show that sales for three months from the April to June period rose by more than 10 per cent compared to the same quarter in 2019 prior to the pandemic. Pent-up shopping demand has buoyed consumer spending but whilst store sales are up, online channels have felt the impact of the end to lockdown restrictions. For June, in particular, store sales were up 13.1 per cent over June 2019 – driven the start of summer, sports fixtures, and planned staycations. Sales of fashion and homewares, along with garden related products were particularly strong during the quarter.
