Rico Back exits Royal Mail role

Royal Mail CEO Rico Back has been pushed to step down from the role following altercations with the CWU, alongside a drop in Royal Mail’s letter volumes and falling share price.

Back’s appointment and agreed terms had attracted considerable unease when first announced in 2018. Since taking up the role in June 2018, he had divided his time between working part of the time London and the rest from his home in Switzerland, where he has remained since the Covid-19 pandemic erupted. This in itself had caused concerns as front line staff of Royal Mail have been expected to work as usual during the period. While a formal search for a permanent CEO to replace Back is actioned, Stuart Simpson will serve as interim CEO with chairman Keith Williams taking a more hands-on role.
