Thursday 2nd December is expected to see delivery service providers swamped in a sea of returns as consumers decide to return their unwanted Christmas gifts and impulse purchases. Royal Mail says that the average UK consumer returns an online purchase virtually every month, but that immediately post Christmas the volumes rocket particularly when it comes to clothing. With many online retailers funding free delivery and free returns it is a seriously margin-eroding period and, for some, could prove to be the final ‘nail in the coffin’ after a turbulent 2019.
