Wayfair geared up for Cyber Monday in the UK

While Amazon.co.uk predicts Cyber Monday will fall on 3rd
December, home goods etailer Wayfair.co.uk estimates the big day
will arrive a week earlier, on 26th November in line with
tradition in the US. In North America, Cyber Monday is the first
Monday after Thanksgiving.

“Last year we saw a major sales peak on Cyber Monday, which
despite it not being a major day on the British retail calendar,
it has today become our biggest trading day of the year. We’re
gearing ourselves up for it again by offering mass discounts and
free delivery on thousands of homeware items and
furniture,” comments Joel Stevenson, Wayfair’s UK managing
director.

Wayfair expects peak shopping time on its site to be between 4pm
and 5pm, with a fairly equal consumer gender split buying items
for the home. Last year, Wayfair.co.uk experienced its biggest
ever sales peak on Cyber Monday, 28th November 2011 at
4.30pm.

A recent survey conducted by Wayfair US, showed than more than
three quarters (77 per cent) of its online shoppers are planning
to shop exclusively online on Black Friday, traditionally a
bricks-and-mortar-only shopping spree. Wayfair US has increased
the number of products available on its site by 500 per cent along
with staff numbers, shortened delivery times and opened two new
warehouses on both coasts, ready to meet its upcoming high
seasonal demands.

Forecasters estimate that more than £60 billion worth of
gross online sales is expected to be made within the seasonal
Thanksgiving period, in the US alone. In the UK, Cyber Monday
signifies the start of the Christmas shopping period. According
to IMRG, £4.6 billion is expected to be spent online during
the two peak shopping weeks commencing 3rd December.
