The boss of apparel retailer Next has lashed out at
supermarket chiefs, warning their call for a tax on online shopping would drive
up prices and wipe out some of Britain’s fastest growing small firms. In a
piece in the Mail on Sunday, Lord Wolfson, the chief executive of Next, said
calls for a web shopping tax were intended to stop supermarkets facing proper
competition. It is believed that Ocado, Littlewoods’ owner Shop Direct, online
clothing retailers Boden and N Brown are lead signatories in a letter that is
set to be sent to George Osborne.
