Marks & Spencer is opening a new distribution centre in
Castle Donington, equivalent to the size of 11 Wembley football pitches. The
new site will handle orders placed on the M&S website as well as act as a
national distribution centre for M&S stores. The opening of the new hub is
part of a transformation programme that culminates in the relaunch of the Marks
& Spencer website and which also includes investment in better buying and
management systems for clothing, home and gift products and a move to source
more products direct from suppliers. The fully automated site will hold 16
million products and process a million items a day. Up to 1,200 people will be
employed during peak periods.
