There was good and bad news from Home Retail Group, which
today announced that sales at Argos for the final eight-week trading period of
the year to 2nd March were up 5.2 percent, taking full year sales to a total of
£3.93 billion. At its Homebase business, however, sales for the full year fell
4.9 percent to £1.43 billion. The company said it was focused on transforming
the Homebase proposition and reinventing Argos as a “digital leader”. A
testament to this is Argos’s online sales, which grew in the period, resulting
in internet penetration increasing to 43 percent of total sales-up from 40
percent a year ago. This growth was supported by the mobile commerce channel in
which sales grew by 117 percent versus last year, noted a company statement.
