In a year which saw Sports Direct open an additional 300,000 sq.ft.of retail space and refit a further 300,000 sq.ft., online sales were up by 26.8 per cent from the pervious year and now account for over 17 per cent of sports retail sales. Profit for the year to 27 April 2014 rose by an impressive 15.6 per cent on overall revenues of £2.7 billion. Plans are progressing for expansion in Europe following acquisitions in Austria during the year and on making inroads into Latvia, Estonia and Lithuania. Controversy has raged in recent months over Mike Ashley’s participation in the business’ Bonus Share Scheme with Ashley finally ceding to City pressure to withdraw from it.
