With the size of the local online shopping market expanding all the time, Jersey Post is set to launch a new service for customers that will change the way islanders can receive items of mail.
Starting in early 2015, parcel lockers will be installed in convenient locations across the Island, creating delivery and pick up points where items of mail can be securely held for the customer to collect at their own convenience. Customers who want to use the service will need to register with Jersey Post, and provide a mobile phone number to which alerts will be sent. They will then be allocated a unique address to which items will be delivered.
The lockers are produced in different sizes to accommodate all types of packages, each one with a secure door that can only be unlocked with a unique pin code. When an item is received by Jersey Post, the customer will be alerted and sent the pin code to access the lockers. When the code is successfully entered at the locker console, the door of the appropriate locker will open and the item of mail can be retrieved. The banks of lockers can also be extended to incorporate chilled or frozen units that can be used to store perishable items for customer collection.
Jersey Post will be the first company to offer this service locally, and has planned a phased introduction over a two year period, starting in January 2015. Eventually there will be parcel lockers in key locations across the Island to provide parish-wide availability. The lockers will be accessible 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, which will make the service extremely convenient for customers who may not be at home to receive deliveries during the day, and then need to wait one working day before they can collect from Jersey Post in Commercial Street.
The introduction of parcel lockers is the latest in a series of alternative delivery initiatives from Jersey Post, which has included SecureDrop and Text & Collect, and is part of an on-going commitment to providing greater customer convenience through innovative products.
Tim Brown, Chief Executive of Jersey Post said, ‘We are very pleased to be the first company in the Channel Islands to introduce this service. It marks a major investment by Jersey Post but we believe it will prove popular with customer because of the greater convenience and flexibility that the lockers can offer in terms of location and pick up time. Jersey Post is constantly seeking ways to add value for money and these parcel lockers raise the bar in terms of customer service and satisfaction.’
Jersey Post is also talking to a number of local businesses to see how parcel lockers can help them improve their respective services, for example enabling them to use the lockers to deliver goods to their customers more quickly and efficiently. The Jersey Post project has also generated interest in neighbouring Channel Island, Guernsey. Boley Smillie, Chief Executive at Guernsey Post stated, “Like Jersey Post, we are receiving an increasing number of larger items of mail and as a result, experiencing similar issues with regards to first-time delivery. We’re very interested in Jersey Post’s parcel locker plans and how the roll-out can help improve delivery efficiency for both our benefit and the customer’s. We are talking to Jersey Post on a regular basis as their project progresses.”
To roll out the project, Jersey Post has chosen to work with ByBox, who already work with a number of prestigious postal operators across Europe. They provide a complete end-to-end solution by manufacturing, installing and managing electronic lockers for the postal industry. Based at their facility in Le Mans, the organisation has made and installed over 57,000 electronic lockers in 20 different countries so have extensive expertise and knowledge to deliver the Jersey Post locker project.
Dan Turner, CEO of ByBox Networks and Co-founder of ByBox said, “We are delighted to be working closely with Jersey Post on their locker roll-out plans. Jersey is a very different location for us and presents some unique challenges but the team at Jersey Post have worked make this project straightforward and as a result, launch the boxes ahead of time.
