500 head office jobs are to go at Sainsbury’s as the supermarket chain is driven to reduce costs following a tough trading year. This mirrors announcements made by Tesco along much the same lines which along with falling sales, has additional much publicised issues to deal with. Tesco is mooted to be selling off Dunnhumby, the highly profitable data business behind its customer loyalty card, and rumours are doing the rounds that Dobbies may also be sold.
Meanwhile, Morrisons has earmarked a number of stores for closure though currently fewer than Tesco which is planning to sell off unprofitable stores as well as sites which it had acquired for future development. Meanwhile Lidl and Aldi remain bullish having achieved strong sales away from the big four and will likely snap up the talent its larger competitors cannot afford to retain.
