Following weeks of alleged and reported hostilities between Direct Golf founder John Andrew and Mike Ashley’s Sports Direct, the latter eventually landed the golfing brand,. buying it out of administration. Begbies Traynor had been appointed as administrators by John Andrews when alleged accounting regularities were discovered, technically rendering the business insolvent . Philip Duffy of Duff & Phelps was appointed joint administrator of the business and its parent company Powerhouse Golf.
Direct Golf was founded in 1991, operates 20 stores and employs 180 people. Sports Direct had taken a 25 per cent stake in the business last year and had funded its expansion plans. However the relationship is understood to have rapidly deteriorated.
