Walmart has entered into an agreement with Rakuten in order to launch an online delivery service for the Japanese market. Launching later this year, the new expanded service will replace Walmart’s existing Japanese online grocery offering and be called Rakuten Sieyu Netsuper. Customers will be able to place orders via Rakuten’s marketplace platform for fulfilment by the new partnership which will benefit from a new dedicated warehouse as well as Seiyu stores.
In addition Walmart will sell some six million ebook and audio book titles, from Rakuten’s Kobo business, in the US market which effectively creates a new category for Walmart and brings it into direct competition with Amazon.
