Marks and Spencer has announced plans to close its Hardwick distribution centre in September. The work will transfer to its Bradford distribution centre which is currently being automated. XPO Logistics operates the Hardwick site, with DHL providing the transportation, and both firms have entered a period of consultation with the 450 staff who will be affected by the site’s closure. This latest move from Marks and Spencer forms part of it’s transformation programme which includes the creation of a single-tier clothing and home logistics network.
Gordon Mowat, M&S director responsible for clothing and home supply chain and logistics said “Closing Hardwick will help to remove some complexity from our network and help speed up our supply chain. However, it was not a decision we took lightly and it is not in any way a reflection on the hard work and dedication provided by our teams on site. We will do all we can to support our partners through the consultation process.”
