Wickes is the latest retail chain to respond to slower trading by seeking to reduce its head office team by a third, which amounts to the loss of a hundred jobs. Wickes’ like-for-like sales for the first three months of this year fell by 4.6 per cent in a challenging market of low property sales coupled with consumer reluctance to spend on high ticket home improvement projects plus a sustained period of wintry and wet weather.
