The Book People which acquired Qwerkity in 2017 is now being sold on. CEO Simon Mason confirmed the decision saying that “whilst the investment has performed reasonably well, the gift market was challenging and the business would now be focused on what it does best which is selling books.”
Across the market, it is understood that online gift seller Find me A Gift is in administration and its employees have been made redundant. Other gift specialists report that tougher trading conditions impacted margins over the past peak season and that it was becoming harder to compete against overseas online marketplace sellers targeting the UK market with lower prices as a result of their unfair advantage of heavily subsidised postal costs and ability to avoid charging VAT.
