Debenhams to pull out of six store locations

Debenhams has announced that it is to permanently close six of its stores in a move which will affect the jobs of over 300 of its staff. One of the stores which will go is the one on Oxford Street, London along with those in Harrogate, Worcester, Staines, Portsmouth, and Weymouth. News of other closures is expected over the next few weeks following liquidation proceedings back in December. Meanwhile, Debenhams has been staging an online clearance sale offering discounts of up to 80 per cent. It is not clear whether concession holders’ stock has been ring-fenced for return to each of them at this stage, or whether it is also being sold off.

Administrator FRP Advisory continues to hold talks with potential buyers of the failed business with JD Sports coming under the spotlight.

FRP Advisory partner Geoff Rowley said: “We continue to engage with interested parties over alternative proposals for the future of Debenhams, but inevitably the latest lockdown has had an effect on our plans for the wind-down of the business. We regret the impact on those colleagues affected by today’s announcement and would like to thank all those who continue to keep the business trading in very difficult circumstances.”
