Pitney Bowes Parcel Shipping Index updates reveal UK carrier market share

Pitney Bowes has announced data on UK carrier market share as an update to its latest Parcel Shipping Index. The updated Index now charts parcel volumes, revenue and market share by carrier for the UK, as well as for 12 other major markets. It reveals that, as a highly consolidated market, the top five carriers in the UK account for 75 per cent of UK parcel shipments by volume. These are Royal Mail (35 per cent), Amazon Logistics (15 per cent), Hermes (10 per cent), UPS (8 per cent) and DHL (7 per cent)  Amazon Logistics generated significant growth of 72 per cent CAGR in volume from 2013-19 and 80 per cent CAGR in revenue growth during the same timeframe.

Ryan Higginson, VP & UK/ROI Country Leader, Pitney Bowes said, “Our Parcel Shipping Index has become the industry’s go-to source for market figures and forecasts. The addition of the carrier market share data means we now have the complete picture, making the Index invaluable for logistics companies, industry watchers and analysts”.

The UK B2C eCommerce market is estimated to be the third largest in the world after China and the US respectively. 2021 could see carriers experience an increase in domestic shipments, while cross-border shipments could temporarily slow.

The insight comes as the Pitney Bowes BOXpoll™ finds that one in four French and German online consumers currently plan to either stop purchasing or purchase less often from UK brands now that the UK is post-Brexit. BOXpoll™, a  market research tool for the eCommerce industry based on a series of consumer surveys about current events, culture and their impact on shopping behaviors and eCommerce logistics, consulted 897 consumers in Germany, 823 in France in 888 in the UK.
