Laithwaites has launched the first 100 per cent recycled glass wine bottle as it moves towards its goal of halving its carbon footprint by 2030. The online wine seller, which operates the Sunday Times Wine Club alongside its eponymous direct to consumer wine retailing business, says that transport and glass packaging together account for some 68 per cent of its carbon footprint as against grape growing at 15 per cent and winemaking at 17 per cent.
The design of the recycled wine bottle also ensures it does not require foil or plastics and the label is fully biodegradable.
“Customers still want the bottle of wine they know and love, so while we will, of course, continue to look at alternative packaging, we wanted to find a traditional format that reduces our impact on the environment,” said Michael Johnson, innovation director at Laithwaites.
