Meta fined by Ireland’s data protection authority

Meta has been fined the equivalent of £343 million by Ireland’s Data Protection Commission, due to the social media giant having breached EU privacy law. The case revolves around Meta making users agree to receiving personalised advertising and then using individuals’ browsing activity to create targeted prospect pools for advertisers. Its Instagram, WhatsApp and Facebook platforms are affected by the ruling which bans Meta from forcing users to sign up to advertising as a condition of being able to use its platforms.

Meta says it will appeal the fine and the ruling.
