Seasalt employees in consultation, Schuh sheds 39 staff, Pets at Home to shed ASM role

Seasalt is the latest in a series of retailers seeking to make redundancies in the wake of the impact of the government’s budget raid on retail sector employers.

With some 60 stores as well as its online and wholesale activity, Seasalt has been conducting a review across its operations to find ways to meet increased costs without sacrificing its growth plans. This has seen it focus on both its head office structure and retail team operations, with the result that an undisclosed number of roles have been identified for consultation.

Meanwhile, at Schuh, 39 roles are being made redundant in a restructuring move kickstarted in January in response to mounting economic challenges. The job losses are spread across head office, and stores and comprise a combination of voluntary and compulsory redundancies.

Pets at Home has decided to call time on the assistant manager role within its store chain and in so doing the retailer has entered into consultation with 2500 staff. The business is offering current ASMs the opportunity to move to other roles in the business, where possible and has increased hourly rates of pay from April.

Both Seasalt and Schuh say that they are supporting affected staff during this difficult time. Pets at Home’s move is understood to be more of a removal of “outdated ways of working” by creating more clearly defined roles across its business.
