Morrisons online sales deliver double-digit growth as recovery accelerates

Morrisons has reported its strongest quarterly sales growth for more than a year, with online delivering double-digit growth as the supermarket continues its turnaround.

Like-for-like sales increased 3.2 per cent during the 13 weeks to 26 July, marking Morrisons’ fifteenth consecutive quarter of like-for-like growth.

Total sales reached £4.1bn, with the supermarket also reporting an increase in market share during the quarter.

Online was among the strongest areas of the business, delivering double-digit sales growth as Morrisons continued to expand its Immediacy and Morrisons Now services.

The retailer has also been investing in its wider eCommerce operations, including a new partnership with Instaleap designed to improve online order fulfilment and last-mile operations.

Convenience continued to expand, with 71 new Morrisons Daily franchise stores opened so far this year and plans for hundreds more in the coming years.

Morrisons also delivered a further £53m of cost savings during the quarter, taking cumulative savings since the programme began to £995m.

The latest performance represents an acceleration from the previous quarter, when like-for-like sales increased 2.2 per cent.

Chief executive Rami Baitiéh said the business had delivered broad-based improvement across supermarkets, online, convenience, pharmacy and manufacturing, as Morrisons continues its programme to modernise the business.
