Shop Direct Group plans to make up to 1,500 workers
redundant with the closure of call centres in Burnley, Newtown,
and Sunderland. It may, however, add 350 jobs to its other
facilities “by introducing flexible shift patterns to
accommodate customers’ changing shopping behaviour”. The
company , whose brands include Littlewoods, Very, and
Woolworths.co.uk, said that the closures reflect the shift
of orders from phone to web. It projects that for 2010/2011 web
sales will account for more than 70 percent of its business. -
