News roundup–Amazon buys Lovefilm, sales up at The Book Depository


The big news this morning is that Amazon.com has
finally confirmed it was buying the remaining shares in online
DVD and games rental business Lovefilm. The deal, for an
undisclosed sum, is expected to close by the end of the first
quarter of the year.
In related LoveFilm news, it has announced a deal with
Ocado whereby the groceries etailer’s inserts
are distributed with customers’ DVD despatches. The first part of
the campaign starts this week and will offer Lovefilm subscribers
£15 off their first shop at Ocado of £75 or more.

Online retailer Book Depository announced a 70
percent sales increase, to £60 million, in the six months to
December 2010. The business now expects to reach £120
million in sales by the end of its financial year.

According to the Guardian, HMV has called a
meeting with KPMG to advise on implementing “a radical
cost-reduction programme” ahead of a loan covenant
test.
