Acorn launches paid channel on Youtube

US-based RLJ Entertainment Inc is launching two paid YouTube
channels under its Acorn TV and OnCue brands. Acorn specialises
in selling DVDs of popular British TV programmes such as
Midsomer Murders and Foyle’s War to UK,
American and Australian consumers.

In addition to its own catalogue and website, Acorn UK also
distributes via major high street retailers, websites including
Amazon and Play.com, wholesale suppliers and other mail order
companies. It also has a presence on Youtube, which will now
provide viewers to access to even more specially-curated
content.

According to Robert L Johnson, chairman of RLJ Entertainment, the
introduction of paid channels “marks the beginning of
RLJE’s goal to become a major player in producing targeted
digital entertainment to audiences that are underserved by
existing channels. We believe the subscription model presents not
only an opportunity to develop original programming, but also
create further shareholder value.”

Youtube announced the availability of the paid channel on 9th
May, explaining that the subscription channels give creators more
“flexibility in monetising and distributing content”.
Subscription fees start at $0.99 per month and every channel has
a 14-day free trial.
