Apple deemed liable for £11bn in unpaid taxes

It has been a long time coming – eight years, to be precise – but the EU Court of Justice has finally ruled that Apple must pay the equivalent of £11bn in unpaid taxes to Ireland.

The Irish government had consistently argued that the tax advantages it gave to Apple to secure employment from the business in Ireland did not need to be repaid.

“The Court of Justice gives final judgment in the matter and confirms the European Commission’s 2016 decision; Ireland granted Apple unlawful aid, which Ireland is required to recover,” stated the court.
