Asda has big plans for Direct

Asda has confirmed a full rollout of its Asda Direct service this
year. It will launch a 1,000-page catalogue, featuring more than
10,000 products, in time for Christmas and back it up with a new
warehouse, in-store collection capabilities and self-service
touch-screen kiosks in-store. Britain’s second-largest
supermarket is ramping up its online operations as well and will
put 1 million SKUs online under its Asda Direct service by 2010.

Asda is following in the footsteps of Tesco, whose websites
reported a very successful Christmas, with sales up 24 per cent,
to more than £190 million. It delivered well over 2 million
orders in the six weeks to 5th January 2008.

By 2011, Asda expects its online grocery and nonfood business to
be turning over more than £1 billion a year. Asda currently
has approximately 1.2 million visitors to its websites each week.
