Asda is understood to have commenced with a consultation process with more than 2800 of its back office staff across its store chain. The retailer is seeking to make significant savings in order to better compete in the tough market as the business enters 2020. Redundancies have not been ruled out.
Via a statement, an Asda spokesperson said: ” The way in which we operate out store-based back office has evolved over recent years to adapt to changing customer behaviour, such as an increase in card payments over cash. As a result, we are proposing some change to increase efficiencies and simple ways of working across administration, compliance and cash office. We have opened a collective consultation with those colleagues impacted and their representatives and will have a conversation about any potential change with our colleagues first.”
The retailer has already courted controversy over its new employment contract for store workers which increased the basic hourly rate as well as the rate for some bank holidays whilst scrapping paid breaks.
