Bass Pro Shops is set to invest US $5.5 billion in the acquisition of Cabela’s. Both groups are specialists in outdoor sports clothing and equipment. Cabela’s primary focus is on the hunting market, with Bass Pro focused on fishing and its subsidiary White River Marine Group specialises in boating. Cabela’s was founded in 1961 and operates 85 stores mostly in the western US states and in Canada. Bass Pro Shops was founded in 1972 and has 99 stores located primarily in the eastern US states and Canada. Both businesses operate substantial online divisions and produce catalogues.
The transaction is expected to complete early in 2017.
