Bonmarche improves profitability

Bonmarche has reported lower revenues for year ending March 31st but is showing a 38 per cent increase in its pre-tax profit. Total sales were £186 million, down from £190 million, with pre-tax profit at £8 million, as against £5.8 million for the previous year. Online sales accounted for 9.5 per cent of the total and were up by 34.5 per cent whereas store like-for-like sales fell by 4.5 per cent.

In common with most clothing retailers, Bonmarche said that the market was difficult during the year but that its online sales reflected consumers’ propensity to shop online rather than in-store.

CEO Helen Connolly said: “Against the backdrop of challenging trading conditions, I am pleased that we have delivered an increase in profit before tax compared to last year.” Adding: “We have made good progress in all areas, particularly online, where we have seen strong growth, whilst also making improvements through a number of self-help initiatives including the product proposition, the loyalty scheme, and developing a more agile supply base.”
