Boohoo credibility brought into question

A BBC Panorama investigation into activity at its ‘model’ factory in Leicester has brought Boohoo the online fast fashion retailer back under the spotlight for all the wrong reasons. This follows the revelation that imported clothing had been mislabelled in the factory as having been made in the UK, thereby potentially misleading customers as to its true origin.

Boohoo responded saying that human error was the reason for what it called ‘an isolated incident impacting under one per cent of the group’s global garment intake’ and that it had taken steps to ensure that it does not happen again.

It later transpired that Boohoo is planning to close the ‘model factory’ site, which had been lauded as the way forward for the business following the scandal surrounding its use of sweatshop labour in Leicester. This had seen routine exploitation of underpaid workers who were also subject to having to endure working conditions that fell well below a lawful standard.
