The Financial Times reports that top retail finance
directors from the British Retail Consortium’s biggest members will meet next
week to thrash out proposals for an overhaul of the business rates system, as
store chains prepare to step up pressure on the government for changes to the
taxation of the sector. The piece notes that the summit will include members
with physical stores and their online-only counterparts to address what some
retail chiefs see as unfair tax treatment, with high street stores being taxed
more heavily than their online-only rivals.
