General merchandise etailer Buy.com is sometimes seen as a
competitor to Amazon.com in the US. Now the Aliso Viejo, CA-based
company is looking to compete with Amazon in the rest of the
world as well. In late October it launched dedicated ecommerce
sites for Canada, France, Germany, and the UK. It is also selling
on the local eBay sites for those countries.
So far the new websites are selling only computer hardware and
software and consumer electronics, the product categories that
Buy.com originally specialised in. The company intends to expand
its international product offering, however. It also intends to
launch sites for Italy and Spain before the end of the
year.
The sites sell in the local currencies and languages, although
the Canadian site offers copy in English only, in effect ignoring
the Quebecois population. Orders are fulfilled from local
warehouses.
