Carpetright brand to be saved but many shops will close

A deal to acquire the Carpetright brand, its IP, two warehouses and 54 of its stores is expected to be confirmed imminently.

Carpetright had last week advised of its intention to appoint PwC as administrator during a desperate search for additional funding. The retailer had been loss-making for some time and was unable to continue servicing its debts. Customer demand had dwindled as a result of the cost-of-living crises, with consumers prioritising necessities over less critical home improvements.

Competitor Tapi has emerged, somewhat logically, as the buyer for Carpetright with its deal, which would save 300 jobs. However, close to 200 Carpetright stores are expected to be permanently shuttered, with the loss of some 1500 jobs.

Carpetright was founded in 1988 by Lord Philip Harris. The founders of Tapi include several members of the Harris family.
