Following a dispute which started in October when staff walked out over attempts to impose a ‘fire and rehire’ policy on staff which would have reduced pay, an agreement has finally been reached at the Clarks footwear business.
This will see workers return with a deal that works in all parties interests. Trade union Community that represented the aggrieved workers turned to Acas to help resolve the bitter dispute between the new owners of Clarks and its Street, Somerset based warehouse employees. Clarks had pushed the initiative saying that the proposed changes would help protect the future of the business which posted a £600m fall in revenues and mounting losses in its most recent accounts. However, it hadn’t reckoned on the hostile reaction from a significant number of very long term employees who felt that their loyalty was being taken for granted.
