Debenhams which operates 11 stores in Ireland employing over 1400 people has applied for High Court protection in order to be able to restructure its loss making business, with the support of creditors, in the Republic of Ireland. During the process, all stores and the online business will continue to trade. A Debenhams spokesperson stressed that its UK business is not affected and that it hoped to secure all or most of the jobs of its employees in Ireland.
