Four years after launching in the UK, Greenwood Village, CO-based
eBags has shut its British website. EBags.co.uk stopped taking
orders on 12th December, with the website referring visitors to
its US site. The 10-year-old company describes itself as
“the world’s largest online retailer of bags and
accessories for all lifestyles”.
“Our long-term plan was to roll out eBags to the EU,”
explained co-founder and senior vice president Peter Cobb.
“With the current economic challenges, we felt that now was
not the time to be spreading our resources into too many arenas
and that our best strategy was to focus on continuing to grow
market share in the USA.” According to The Wall Street
Journal, eBags’ holiday sales were flat from the previous
year.
Cobb isn’t ruling out a return to Europe, however: “Once
the financial situation settles down, eBags will investigate all
opportunities for growth. Assuming the increase in eCommerce in
Europe continues, expansion into Europe will be considered at the
appropriate time.”
