First Resources buys Modern Originals database


Multichannel retail group First Resources Ltd has acquired the
600,000-strong customer databases of Modern Originals and Modern
Woman for an undisclosed sum. In addition to the databases, First
Resources acquired a licence to use the Modern Originals and
Modern Woman brand names for a limited period. The purchase
follows the decision by Paris-based Serpie to discontinue its
catalogue operations in the UK after 15 years.

The Modern Originals catalogue was launched as a competitor to
male-oriented gift catalogues such as Innovations and Pro Idee.
Modern Woman featured exclusive women’s fashion and is a much
smaller file, with 34,000 names generated since 2001. List
management will remain with Pamela Gardiner at Accent Direct
Marketing, who already has a number of First Resource databases
under management.

“For us, Modern Originals was a ‘must have’
database,” said First Resources chairman Nigel Swabey,
“as the list has consistently performed better for our key
titles – Scotts of Stow, Expert Verdict, the Original Gift
Company, and Presents Direct – than any other database of UK
catalogue customers.”
