Global online marketplace Fruugo research shows that this year’s Black Friday will be another record-breaking year for digital sales. The marketplace has itself already experienced a triple-digit percentage increase from last year in the majority of its top product categories.
Rebecca Smith, Senior Digital Analyst at Fruugo, reports:
“We can already report a whopping 1,031 per cent increase in sales of computer components compared to last year – 82 per cent of this growth is down to game controllers alone. In some ways, this isn’t a surprise as the number of gamers has increased from 2.7 billion players in 2020 To 2.9 billion players in 2021 worldwide, and online gaming has been cited as becoming ‘a social lifeline’ especially during lockdowns.
We’ve also seen a massive 243 per cent increase from last year’s sales in toys & seasonal products, driven by early demand in advent calendars, showing people are increasingly using Black Friday to shop for Christmas deals.
We’ve also seen a tremendous growth in clothing purchases, with a 147 per cent year-on-year increase in terms of item sales value, particularly in various types of uniforms – sports, for example. We’re noticing a sudden interest in heated jackets, which wasn’t a trend last year – possibly in response to all the news reports we are to expect a Winter chill this year.
Interestingly, as we now supply clothing items made in Asia directly to consumers, this growth has also been driven by the fact that suppliers in Asia adapt very quickly to what consumers are searching for and are therefore far more nimble than traditional retailers relying on stock bought and shipped in bulk months ago, catering more directly to what consumers are wanting to purchase today.”
