GMB to drum up strike votes

Amazon workers are being asked to vote on proposed industrial action over pay which will target distribution centres in Rugeley and Mansfield. This follows recent action in Coventry. The ballots for this latest action close on 9th June.

Amazon does not officially recognise the GMB but it is understood that workers have submitted a request for their union to be recognised as it has reached the membership threshold to trigger mandatory recognition. If successful GMB will be the first union in Europe USA to be recognised by the online retailing giant.

£15 per hour is being sought by workers who are currently paid £10.50 per hour.

Amazon said: “Over the past seven months, our minimum pay has risen by ten per cent and by more than 37 per cent since 2018.

“We also work hard to provide great benefits, a positive work environment and excellent career opportunities.”
