H&M is joining fashion counterparts Inditex, Marks and Spencer, M&S and others in withdrawing from using Myanmar factories for the production of clothing lines.
H&M is investigating 20 cases where it is alleged that there has been abuse of workers. The area is notorious for its forced labour exploitation and its scant regard for the provision of safe working conditions, healthy working hours and payment of fair wages.
An H&M spokesperson said: “After careful consideration, we have now taken the decision to gradually phase out our operations in Myanmar.
“We have been monitoring the latest developments in Myanmar very closely and we see increased challenges to conduct our operations according to our standards and requirements.”
The business added that its withdrawal from Myanmar would follow the responsible exit framework developed by IndistriALL.
