Hobbycraft Artisan programme assists with launch of over 50 colleague created craft products

Hobbycraft’s Artisan programme, launched in 2020 to maximise colleagues’ talents and give them the tools and skills they need to grow and fulfil their passions, has led to the launch of over 50 colleague-created craft products, which are now available to purchase at Hobbycraft.

These products vary from Paint Your Own Flower Vase Sets and Make Your Own Necklace and Earrings Kits to Crochet Kits, Cotton Fat Quarters and Trolley Stickers, demonstrating the wide variety of colleague skill sets on offer within the business.

Many Hobbycraft colleagues are skilled multi-hyphenates who help customers with product guidance and crafty inspiration during their shop. However, the majority of these colleagues also dedicate spare time outside of work to crafting and developing their own side hustles. The Artisan programme was set up to enhance customers’ shopping experience while encouraging colleagues to pursue their creative passions.

The continuous development of eCommerce and business tools has made it simpler than ever to start a side hustle, with the number of non-employing businesses rising by 26 per cent since 2010. The programme aims to tap into the entrepreneurial spirit of colleagues and help turn their business dreams into reality. Artisans are able to regularly pitch their product designs to the business, with all profits from successful designs going to the Artisan creator.

By joining the programme, colleagues also have the opportunity to develop their writing and presenting skills, learn how to effectively use social media, and participate in specialist supplier training days centred around business skills and development.

Since its establishment in 2020, the Artisan programme has involved 138 employees, of whom 50+ have produced products that have been sold within the arts and crafts retailer.

The craft skill sets on offer within the business are also utilised to inspire customers hoping to try their hand at a new hobby or start up their own side hustle. Colleagues within the Artisan programme regularly host craft workshops in-store and online and produce project guides for the Hobbycraft Ideas Hub.

Customers wanting to pursue their own entrepreneurial dream can also take advantage of the Hobbycraft Plus subscription service, which provides growing craft businesses and dedicated crafters with a great-value package that delivers cost-saving discounts alongside targeted support and advice to help small businesses flourish.

Katherine Paterson, customer director at Hobbycraft, comments, “The fantastic skills and passion for craft seen through our colleagues is what makes the business so special, and it is important we develop these talents to help progress their career and pursue their aspirations, all while delivering the best possible experience to our customers. We are continuing to expand the Artisan programme further and look forward to seeing more amazing colleague creations hit the shelves.”
