Last week IKEA said it intended to fully repay staff furlough monies received in the UK and in a further eight countries as it had fared better than expected during lockdown. Games Workshop has said that it too will repay government support monies. Now we learn that Bunzl will follow, having benefited from increased demand for gloves and gowns from hospitals during the pandemic.
It is hoped that others whose businesses have generated strong sales will follow this lead. Meanwhile, it is emerging that some businesses may well find themselves in trouble as they have been taking furlough funding for employees whilst also requiring them to do some work from home.
Law firms are warning company directors to ensure that they have honoured the terms of the furlough scheme and that if they are conscious of having breached any of the conditions, they are recommended to make repayments ahead of a major HMRC crackdown.
